Spring for Susannah by Catherine Richmond

Spring for Susannah
by
Description:

After the deceased of both parents, Susannah Underhill was helpless and poor. Under the recommendation of her best friends Ellen, she traveled alone to the west, to Dakota territory and to get married to Ellen's brother in law, Jesse Mason the faithful farmer(a stranger she only knew from letters).

At first Susannah was apprehensive about their marriage, and wasn't quite accommodate with the new dreadful environment. When time passed, Susannah found herself fell deeply in love with her homely, cheerful and understanding husband. However, their life weren't smooth sailing... after their crops infested by the grasshoppers and lead them to nothingness, Jesse decided to leave their home and seek for more prospect in other town, which left Susanna in despair for some time and mere death to himself.

Influence by Jesse's faith in God, Susanna too learned to entrust herself to God and be confidence with herself!

My comments:
I admire Susanna's bravery, knowledge and her faith for Jesse. Despite she has got many other suitors(Reese, Magnar and Reverent JW) courting her when Jesse weren't around, she refused their proposals and insisted to take care the farm herself(quite rock head though). Like Jesse too, he is humorous, kind and certainly good with children, sadly didn't know what's gone wrong on his mind that he decided to leave Susanna (I assume a caring husband like him would never thought of leaving the wife alone in any circumstances, especially in a deserted territory) . Anyway I enjoy reading this novel, especially the parts where Susanna helped delivered the cattle, and treated other animals.

I will certainly recommend this book to my fellow book lovers, this is definitely a good read!

  1. Thank you for reviewing Spring for Susannah!
Yes, it was hard for Jesse to leave Susannah on the claim. The other option was starving to death. He planned to work a few weeks, then come home. Susannah had to stay on the claim, otherwise they'd lose it and have to start all over with proving up (silly Homestead law). Have you read Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books? Pa Ingalls spent most of his time away from home. That family togetherness thing is a myth.
Thanks again for reading Spring for Susannah!
